課程概述

Medical Rotation

I. Goals
A. The techniques in acquiring and maintaining medical history
B. Basic restraining and treatment skills
C. Medicine prescription
D. Monitoring patients
E. Basic examination, diagnosis, and treatment skills
F. Imaging diagnosis
G. Ethical and legal issues
H. Ward care and patient follow-ups
II. General rules
A. The students must fulfill at least 22 semi-day shifts during the block time. Further volunteer shifts are encouraged.
B. The students must report to the residents before 8:30 am and 1:45 am. After each shift, faculty (veterinarian) will sign on the shift table.
III. Obligations
A. Body temperature and general examination will be carried out and recorded in detail by the student, then confirmed by medical residents
B. Planning and helping with laboratory Diagnostic procedures
C. Helping with patient treatment including fluid therapy, blood transfusion, ward care, and special diagnostic procedures
D. Helping with prescription instructions
E. Patient follow-ups
IV. Medical seminars
A. Weekly, every Friday afternoon, PM 2:00-3:00
B. Each seminar includes 2 clinical case reports and 2 oral topic reports
C. Written reports of the oral topic should be no less than 3 pages, with reference

Surgical Rotation

I. Surgical rotation takes 4 weeks in each semester of the senior year. During this period of time, students will spend full time in the Surgical Section. Volunteer extra time outside the block is also encouraged
II. The goals of surgical training
A. General surgical diagnostic techniques
B. Sterile procedures and basic surgical techniques
C. Care of surgical patients
D. Medical record and prescription
E. Anesthetic and monitoring procedures
F. X-ray reading
III. The Surgical Section
A. 2 examine rooms, 1 prep room, 2 general treatment rooms, 2 sterile operation rooms, 1 television/conference room.
B. Faculty and staff
1. 2 faculties
2. 2 full time veterinary surgeons
3. 6-7 surgical residents, including 1-2 chief residents
4. 3 surgical technicians
IV. Training , out-patient
A. Injection techniques
B. Each case will be followed by a designated student
C. General examination will be carried out and detailed recorded by student, then confirmed by surgical residents
D. Planning of laboratory Diagnostic procedures
E. Helping with pharmacy instructions
V. Training , operation room
A. Taking body temperatures and carry out pre-operative physical examination
B. Draw blood for lab test
C. Surgical assistant is the primary receiver of the patient, will be familiar with surgical procedures, writing surgical records, and in charge of the follow ups of the patient.
D. Anesthesia of ASA I patients will also carried out by students and supervised by residents
E. Daily shift student must carry tissue samples to the pathology section
F. Daily cleaning of operation rooms after work
VI. Reports / meetings and seminars
A. Surgical briefings: designated surgical assistant and anesthetist will brief the surgical background information and planned anesthesia program at the operative table. Faculty and residents will comment.
B. Scrub-in assistant will turn in surgical report, with appropriate reference.
C. Student will turn in daily surgical clinic report while their stay at surgical section. Surgical report can replace surgical clinic report.
D. Surgical meetings: held after 5:00pm every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
E. Each student will have one oral report and turn in its written edition on a designated topic during their surgical block.

Diagnostic Lab
I. Goals
A. Familiar with correct sample collection, lab procedures, and the use of lab machines
B. Capable of evaluate and read lab diagnostic results.
II. General introduction
A. The diagnostic lab provides laboratory test of hematology, biochemistry, serology, urology, stool, hair, and so on, to assist clinical case evaluation and diagnosis.
B. Staff includes the head of section, one faculty, 1 technician, 1 assistant, and 1 contracted veterinarian.
III. General rules
A. 6 half-day shifts each block. The block is 4 weeks long, shared with pharmacy block. Volunteer shifts are encouraged.
B. Orientation will be taken place on the first day of the block.
C. Students should report to duty before 8:45AM and 1:45PM..
D. All samples submitted to the lab should be handled with standard procedures. All results should be re-confirmed by lab veterinarian and given to the referral doctor.
E. The lab protocols will be learned:
1. CBC, infectious disease antibody and antigen tests, biochemical tests, T4 test, etc.
2. Urinalysis, urine sediment examination, urolith analysis, vaginal smear cytology, stool floatation, stool examination, hair examination.
F. Daily working sheet should be filled out each time.
G. One oral topic report with written edition is needed in each block.
H. An educational poster is needed for each group before the end of each block.

Pharmacy
I. Goal: familiar students with prescription reading, preparation of medications, and dispense of medicines.
II. General rules
A. Mandatory 6 half-day shifts each block. The block is 4 weeks long, shared with pharmacy block. Volunteer shifts are encouraged.
B. Any problem regarding prescription should be confirmed with staff in charge.
C. Students should report to duty before 9:00 AM and 2:00PM..
D. Each student will submit one term report on each semester. Topics will be assigned.

Large and Farm Animal
I. Groupings
A. Farm animals (cattle, horse, goat, sheep, pig), 4 faculties.
B. Fowls, 4 faculties.
C. Aquarian animals, 2 faculties.
II. General rules
A. Twelve shifts are needed in each block of practice.
B. The learning program includes field practice and autopsy.
C. Faculty and veterinarian will in charge discussion sessions.
D. Field report is needed with each field service, handing to faculty in charge in 2 weeks.
E. Vehicles and liability insurance will be arranged by department office.
